Jean-Louis said this amazing thing. He said, ‘I have appeared in a lot of Westerns, but I do not know any cowboys. I have appeared in a lot of thrillers, but I do not know any gangsters.’ Cinema in general speaks of things that have nothing to do with our lives, and that makes me sick because it’s such a fantastic medium. You can really communicate with people. And it’s used to make people stupid. That makes me angry.”

“In all of my work I’m trying to create a dialogue, in which I want to provoke the recipients, stimulate them to use their own imaginations,” Mr. Haneke said when asked about unifying themes. “I don’t just say things recipients want to hear, flatter their egos or comfort them by agreeing with them. I have to provoke them, to take them as seriously as I take myself. When I see a film or read a book, that’s what I’m expecting, to be taken seriously. I want to be led to question myself, to question things I assume I know.”
